Giving Back: Supporting our Community

The unique relationship Princess Anne High School has in Virginia Beach — by nature of being the oldest school in the City and with our location right in the heart of Virginia Beach in Pembroke / Virginia Beach Town Center — means that we are often asked to serve as ambassadors of Virginia Beach City Public Schools in the capacity of performing for our Community.  Over the years, this has lead to some wonderful opportunities for Civic Engagement:

  • Performing for the USS San Jacinto when it returned from war in 2003 (Speed of Sound Big Band)
  • Performing for the “Topping” of the Armada Hoffler Building in Virginia Beach Town Center — when the large spire was added to the top of the building (Speed of Sound Big Band)
  • Performing for the opening of the Sandler Center (Fabulous Marching Cavaliers)
  • Performing for the Grand re-opening of the Cavalier Hotel (Roots n’ Fifths Jazz Combo and the Fabulous Marching Cavaliers)
  • Performing for the “Norwegian Lady” remembrance ceremony for NATO personnel (PA Brass Quintet)
  • Perform at various store openings in the Pembroke / Town Center area (such as the opening of Wal-mart) (Fabulous Marching Cavaliers)
  • Assist with Hurricane Matthew clean-up in the Windsor Woods Community

2018 – 2019 was a particularly busy year for community engagement for PA Bands:

  • Organize and collect a community-wide effort of supplies and then transport them in our 2 twenty-five foot trailers down to Havelock, NC for the Havelock Band to distribute for Hurricane Florence relief. Scarlett Morgan, James E. MacRoberts, Jorge Benitez, Lyn Benitez and the Havelock Band Boosters were VITAL to this effort!!!
  • Perform for a local church (Forever Grateful Ministries) community outreach event on the way to a competition at Sportsplex after a show-day rehearsal
  • Perform for Friday Night Flights
  • March in the Veterans’ Day Parade (like always… we’re honored!)
  • March in the Grand Illumination Parade in Norfolk
  • Percussion Ensemble, Horn Ensemble, and Roots n’ Fifths perform at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Nursing Home
  • Perform a Side-by-Side concert at Thalia Lynn Baptist Church with the Old Dominion University Wind Ensemble
  • Organize and perform at the “Battle of the Bands” (more like the “Cooperation of the Bands”), the VBCPS kick-off event for the Pharrell Williams “Something’s in the Water” Festival
  • Perform at the Opening of Wegman’s
  • Perform the National Anthem at Harbor Park for a Tides Game
  • Host the Big Spring Jam at Virginia Beach Town Center
  • Drum line performance at Thoroughgood ES SOL kick-off
  • Drum line performance for Relay for Life
  • Drum line performance for Sentara Hospice Camp Light House
  • Perform at VB Remembers, with love for our community and City. There has never been a greater honor for this band program in the 18 years I have been the band director here.

We continue in 2019-2020:

  • Flute Ensemble performance at Chrysler Museum in Norfolk
  • Jazz Combo performance at Chrysler Museum in Norfolk
